Hi Richard

Thanks for getting in touch. I'm a former Trustee and Acting CEO of BackCare and I care very deeply about the issue of school furniture, heavy schoolbags and backpain.

I will email you separately but if any readers want to learn more then just click on the articles here and here. I can also advise on how to reduce the burden.

I wish to contact Sean McDougall in conection with school furniture.

I do not know if you can help, but according to Backcare one of the biggest causes of back pain in UK is badly designed school chairs. The fact that the base of standard school chair slopes backwards by -5 degrees and causes the pelvis to tilt backwards and this in turns distorts the lower back putting huge pressure on the lower intervertebral discs.

I am not sure you are aware but the European Standards Commission is trying to introduce school chairs which have an tilt of -10 degrees.

Already 21% of children experience back pain before the age of 16. 15% of children under age 16 seek medical attention to deal with it. This new legislation is bound to increase the incident of back pain hugely.

Yours Sincerely
